Preparation
Ensure surface to be painted is sound, clean, dry and free from grease. Avoid the inhalation of dust. Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960’s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.
Bare Wood - Ensure the wood has a moisture content of less than 20%. Treat knots and resinous areas with two thin coats of Knotting Solution. Apply one coat of preservative to all bare timber paying particular attention to end grain and joints. Fill any surface defects, holes or joints using a Two Pack Wood Filler. Apply one coat of Leyland Truguard Flexible Exterior Undercoat followed by two coats of Leyland Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss.
Bare Metal - Remove any rust and corrosion and apply a suitable metal primer. Apply one coat of Leyland Truguard Flexible Exterior Undercoat followed by two coats of Leyland Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss.
Previously Painted Surfaces - for maximum performance, old paint or varnish should be completely removed. Unsound Condition: Remove all existing coatings using a hot air stripper or All Purpose Paint & Varnish Remover. Rub down the bare timber using fine waterproof abrasive paper - leaving it in a clean and smooth condition. Then treat timber as per Bare Wood. Wear a suitable face mask when dry sanding. Sound Condition: Clean down the surface with Sugar Soap and abrade - to ensure maximum protection apply one coat of Truguard Flexible Exterior Undercoat followed by two coats of Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss, allowing 16-24 hours between coats.
